West Welcomes New Staff Members for the 2020-2021 School Year: Mikaela Joiner

Mikaela Joiner is a new special education teacher here at WEst. Before teaching here, Ms. Joiner has taught special education classes at Romeoville High School, co-teaching 10th grade English. At West, Ms. Joiner is co-teaching Independent Literature and Ecology in addition to Study Methods. She is particularly excited about “co-teaching Independent Literature as [she loves] to read.” Her interest in special education had originated from her participation in Best Buddies from when she was a student at Glenbard East. However, her interest in teaching was awakened at a much younger age, “since kindergarten.” At Lewis University, Ms. Joiner was able to specialize in special and elementary education. She is passionate about “working with and getting to know [her] students.” The support she has received at West so far “has been great” while starting her new teaching position during a pandemic.
