West welcomes Ms. Elizabeth Horvat, a new addition to our wonderful staff! Splitting her time between Glenbard East and West, Ms. Horvat teaches psychology and AP Human Geography. Before joining our school, she attended Neuqua Valley High School and then taught there for a few years.
A lifelong rider, Ms. Horvat spent many years horseback riding after school, a passion that would continue for many years. Outside of school Ms. Horvat is an avid coffee drinker, even inspiring a custom coffee drink at a local Naperville shop!
Initially drawn to stand-up comedy, Ms. Horvat discovered her love for social studies through her high school teachers. “I realized that social studies wasn’t just about memorizing facts and dates,” she explained. “It’s a place to see yourself in the world.” She particularly loves the psychology aspect that allows her to delve deep into human behavior and identity. In her short time at West, she has already been impressed by the kindness of the students and community at the school and is already looking forward to continuing at West “minus the stairs” she joked.
In this upcoming year Ms. Horvat is eager to instill a love of social studies and a better understanding of self in her students. Most importantly, she hopes to create a positive learning environment where students have “a fun place to go to.” If at the end of the day her students learn anything and know it from her class Ms. Horvat believes, “I did my job.” We are excited to have Ms. Horvat as a member of our teaching staff and look forward to a wonderful year with her!
