A lot of you reading may have had Mr. Sanders as your teacher in the past, or are currently enrolled in one of his classes — what’s he been up to as of late? Although mostly known among the student body for teaching classes like world history or AP Euro, or coaching soccer and cross country, Mr. Sanders has since taken on yet another role; (don’t worry, he’s still teaching). He is now one of West’s two interim instructional coaches. What exactly does this entail?
As an interim instructional coach, Mr. Sanders describes his job as something like being a coach or advisor for teachers. His main job within this role is to act as a resource to teachers and work with them to come up with strategies and activities for classes, or make an idea of theirs that they would like to try out come true. Mr. Sanders describes his new position as a fun new challenge, and says he has gained a lot of perspective on teachers’ everyday work, noting that loves to see what his coworkers are up to and has since gained even more appreciation for what everyone in the school does.
When asked what impact/message he would like to leave with students of West, Mr. Sanders replied that he would like to see graduates walk as well-rounded students who are passionate in what they want to pursue. Above everything though, he emphasized his desire to see students become people who help others through their passions. “You have had many opportunities and have great support behind you, so use what you have been given to serve others.” Although he understands this might be difficult, he applies his favorite quote to guide his work and drive, and hopes the student body can do the same:
“Never let the future disturb you. You will meet it, if you have to, with the same weapons of reason which today arm you against the present.”
