Joining West’s lucrative lineup of clubs and organizations this school year, the Women’s Empowerment Club is much more than what its name might show. The club works to create awareness and support for social issues while also focusing on communal political events. Though women’s empowerment is their primary mission, they also strive to make the school a more welcoming and conscious community.
For the past few months, the club has been expanding and working with other organizations to plan events catered to students wanting to make a difference. Earlier this year, the association organized an event for voter registration to help students of age make sure they take their chance to vote. Just before Election Day, they planned a mock drive that allowed students who could not vote to voice their opinions.
Recently, they have been discussing their next event, a supplies drive for a local women’s shelter with the goal to create awareness for domestic violence. During the meeting, Ms. Fleming, a librarian at the Elliot Library, spoke as an organizer for a proposed grocery drive to help make connections with local stores and broadcast the drive amongst the local community. Along with Ms. Fleming and club sponsor Ms. Hass, members also discussed the possible length of the drive and how the collection process should work. Since then, the drive has evolved into a drive for cleaning supplies which can be donated in the library until November 15th. Around the same time as the event, a group was scheduled to present healthy relations for teens in connection with domestic violence.
President Lily Wiedholz, junior, led the meeting, overviewing previous successes and future goals. Every member had access to their opinions and thoughts on the plans mentioned in the group’s identity, like poster creation and possible action for the remainder of the semester and the school year. Though still young, the Women’s Empowerment Club continues to impact Glenbard West and locally.
If interested in joining, check the West Winds for meeting dates and contact Ms. Hass with any questions.
