The Special Education Department is thrilled to welcome back Glenbard West alumni, Mr. Brenen Wilson, in a new role as a teacher. Mr. Wilson, who grew up in Glen Ellyn, shares a deep personal connection to our school and community. He reflects, “I’ve always felt a strong bond with this school and community. West played a significant role in shaping who I am today, not just academically but personally.”
Mr. Wilson received his undergraduate degree from Indiana State University, and later, he received his master’s from National Louis University. Upon returning to West, he started teaching Contemporary World History and Study methods, which is only part of what he does here at West. He states, “I serve as a case manager, supporting students with diverse needs to ensure they thrive academically and personally.” Additionally, Mr. Wilson mentions his role in helping students “build skills in critical thinking, organization, and self-advocacy,” which are all goals of a Glenbard graduate.
Mr. Wilson’s love for the community is evident in his actions. Apart from his teaching role, he coaches football, basketball, and track, staying connected to the community. His coaching of the Glen Ellyn 8th-grade Titans basketball team is a clear example of his commitment to the community and the growth of young athletes. His actions foster a sense of belonging and unity in our community.
Mr Wilson is fond of reading about history and current events, which “ties into my passion for teaching.” Additionally, he enjoys “spending quality time outdoors with family and friends, whether it’s hiking, biking, or enjoying Glen Ellyn’s beautiful parks.
When asked what his biggest goal for his students was, he said: “Help them build confidence in themselves and their abilities, both academically and personally. I want them to develop the skills and mindset to overcome challenges, advocate for themselves, and pursue their goals with determination.” He concludes his words by saying, “Ultimately, I hope that they leave my classroom not just with knowledge but with the belief that they are capable of achieving great things, no matter what past they choose in life.”
