The Halloween season is here and there are so many ways to celebrate, but one of the easiest ways is to watch some themed movies. Don’t know where to start? This article can help with that! Find out some of the best movies to watch this October by continuing to read this article.
10.) Scream
Scream, a classic scary movie, is set in the small town of Woodsboro, California, follows a teenage girl, Sidney Prescott, who soon becomes the target of a psycho killer. This killer in a ghostface mask starts terrorizing Sidney and her friends and taunting them over the phone with questions about horror movies, but who could this Ghostface be?
Now this movie mocks cliche mystery stab movies yet at the same time branches off and becomes its own franchise. In my opinion, Scream is the perfect amount of scary without being too intense for people like me who hate horror movies. I also appreciate the way this film twists and turns when it comes to the Ghostface and believe that everyone should watch this movie at least once.
9.) Hubie Halloween
It’s Halloween night in Salem, Massachusetts, the “Halloween capital” and local city volunteer, Hubie, played by Adam Sandler, is, like every year, trying to keep his town safe on Halloween night. Despite many in the town mocking Hubie and pranking him, he keeps going and somehow finds himself in the middle of an actual murder investigation.
Hubie Halloween is a film with the perfect balance between comedy and thrill. I believe that this movie is a great one to watch with a group of friends since Hubie, played by Adam Sandler, always sparks laughs. I appreciated that the movie always had a comedic break after something thrilling happened so that you were never left too long in suspense.
8.) Halloween
In 1963, on Halloween night, six year old Michael Myers killed his teenage sister, Judith. This led to him being incarcerated for fifteen years but on October 30th, 1978, Michael finds himself escaping in a stolen car while being transferred for a court date. Myers then returns to Haddonfield, Illinois, his quiet hometown, to look for his next victims.
This movie is probably the scariest one on this list but it is also a bit hokey because of its age. Halloween is a real classic horror movie set on Halloween night with a masked man on the loose. At first the movie spooked me out a bit but I grew to love it as I watched and got to appreciate it.
7.) It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown
This classic holiday-themed “Peanuts” movie is a sweet Halloween movie about Linus and his hope in the existence of “The Great Pumpkin”. When he finds that no one else believes in this pumpkin that is said to rise on Halloween night, Linus decides to spend the entire night in the pumpkin patch waiting for “The Great Pumpkin” even when all his friends are out trick or treating.
This Charlie Brown movie is a very sweet one that I believe many people have seen in their childhoods. This is because it teaches many little lessons about being kind that kids should learn but I think anyone could watch this film to learn a little something. Also, I personally enjoy the little jokes snuck into each corner of the movie and the essence of fall it gives off.
6.) Halloweentown
Marnie and her two younger siblings go against their mothers wishes and follow their grandmother back to her home, Halloweentown, where supernatural beings live their lives. Marnie then finds that she is from a family of witches and that she will become one as well on her 13th Halloween. Then, she finds that evil is threatening to take over the world and she and her family are forced to try and save Halloweentown.
Halloweentown is a sweet family movie that always seems to spark joy within me. This might be because of how Marnie finds secrets kept from her by her mother but then they eventually work it out. So although the movie is Halloween themed, it also brings glee.
5.) The Addams Family (1991)
A man claiming to be Fester, the long lost brother of Gomez, the father of Wednesday and Pugsley Addams, shows up at the door of the Addams family and everyone is thrilled, besides Moricia, wife of Gomez, who suspects the man to be a fraud. When Fester manages to get the Addams evicted from their home, Gomez is faced with having to challenge him for the home back. Is this man really Fester, and will the Addams clan prevail?
The Addams family has several different movies and even a show many people are familiar with—Wednesday. This movie I specifically like most out of all the ones out there relating to the family. This is because it has twists and turns in the plot that kept me hooked and the actors portrayed a caring family in such a way that I felt for the Addams. Along with this the family is certainly odd in their own way but that keeps the movie interesting.
4.) The Nightmare Before Christmas
This film focuses on Halloweentown’s known and loved pumpkin king, Jack Skellington, who has become tired of the ordinary routine of the annual holiday of Halloween. Jack accidentally comes across Christmastown, filled with bright colors and happy spirits, and decides he will kidnap Santa Claus to obtain rein of Christmas.
The Nightmare Before Christmas has a very contrasting scenery that adds to the oddity of the film. It takes us from Halloweentown, a very spooky place with many different creatures, to Christmastown, where toys are being made by elves who work for Santa Claus. This is what I really love in the movie, the change in atmosphere and the display of different traditions year round.
3.) Ghost Busters
A group of scientists lose their jobs at a university in New York City, leaving them clueless and leading them to become “Ghost Busters.” They start to fight supernatural elements with their advanced tech and knowledge for money. Eventually, the Ghostbusters accidentally open a gateway to another dimension and are left with the duty to save New York City from evil.
There is a sweet balance between spooky ghouls and goofy comedy examined in this film. The ghosts all examine different qualities that make them unique and funny. It is also very interesting to see the way that the supernatural elements are depicted in Ghost Busters. All in all, this movie is just very fascinating.
2.) Beetle Juice
Married couple Barbara and Adam Maitland die in a car accident which leaves them stuck haunting their home, unable to leave. A teen girl, Lydia Deetzes, and her father and stepmother move into the residence and the Maitlands try and fail to scare them away. This causes Beetlejuice, a boisterous spirit, to offer his service which eventually turns dangerous to all.
Beetle Juice is one of my favorite movies, which is why it is up so high on the list. I love the plot of this film because of how unique it is, I’ve never seen anything quite like it. The different aspects of this world that the characters live in continue to interest me every time I watch Beetle Juice.
1.) Hocus Pocus
Max Dennison is a teenage boy who moves to Salem, Massachusetts. On Halloween night, he visits an abandoned house with his younger sister, Dani, and new friend, Allison. This house is said to be haunted based on a story Allison tells but Max brushes it off. Evidentially, Max frees a coven of three witches that once lived in the house. Now, they all have to work together with the help of a magic cat to retrieve the witch’s spell book to prevent them from becoming immortal.
I chose Hocus Pocus as the number one slot on this list because I think it is a classic family Halloween movie. It has witches, talking cats and a teenage boy who constantly tries to impress a cute girl. I believe that this movie presents many unique qualities while still following the outline of a Halloween movie, which is why I enjoy it so much.
I hope that you can find at least some enjoyment in one of these Halloween movies I have listed and watch them with friends or family. There are many more amazing fall movies that I was not able to mention in this article that can be viewed and appreciated this October!
