Have you ever wondered what it takes to be on the girls swim team? Well It’s more than just endless laps—it’s based on teamwork and a love for the water. For many swimmers, the pool becomes a second home-and their teammates, a second family.
A typical practice for a swimmer starts just after the school day ends. Their practices focus on endurance, technique, and building strength and speed.
It sounds exhausting, but the swimmers gain a special type of satisfaction from “spending hours with [their] best friends while also putting in hard work”, says varsity athlete and team captain Harper Ullman.
Between sets, teammates laugh together, share inside jokes, and encourage each other through their tough spots. The bond built between these hours of the day is what makes the swim team a team.
But the team isn’t only shaped at practice—meet days are where everything comes to life.
According to junior team captain Wynne Bielecki, meet days build “such a positive and motivating atmosphere, and [create] such strong friendships” that will endure even after the season is over.
These meet days carry a special type of energy-mixing nerves, excitement and adrenaline into the pool, where It’s not just a competition, but some of the most memorable parts of the season.
As races begin, the atmosphere intensifies. Swimmers step up to their blocks with hearts pounding, ready for a chance to compete, and once they dive in, it becomes pure instinct — every stroke, turn, and kick is a culmination of years of practice.
Outside of the water is filled with moments of joy: teammates huddled in towels, celebrating records, and encouraging each other from across the pool. Whether they’re celebrating a new best time or pushing through a tough race, the team always supports each other with genuine enthusiasm.
By the time the swimmers leave the meets, they are tired and ready to go home. But they always leave with something more than just a record: pride, happiness, and the memory of another meet that brought them closer as a team.
For the girls, swimming isn’t just a sport, but an opportunity to build true connections with their peers.
Bielecki says, “my favorite memory definitely has to be team breakfast at the start of each season because it’s a great way to get to know new teammates”, emphasizing her love for her team.
Similarly, Ullman says “I love how the team is all really connected, both JV and varsity, and I love that I get to spend two hours every day with some of my best friends.”. These Co-Captains stop at nothing to make the season a fun experience for their team.
At the end of the season, their experiences are not shaped solely by the score on the time sheets, but by the friendships, early mornings, late bus rides, and countless hours together doing what they love. And that, more than anything, is what makes life in the fast lane unforgettable.
