Everyone’s talking about the U.S. Men’s Olympic Hockey Team, who are bringing NHL players with them to the Winter Games for the first time for any Olympic team since 2014.
The Winter Olympics, taking place in Milano and Cortina, Italy, are quickly approaching with the Opening Ceremony on February 6th. All the sports are training for the exciting competitions to come. One that can always captivate a crowd well is the fast paced and intense game on the ice—hockey. So, let’s take a look at the U.S. Men’s Olympics Hockey Team and how they’re preparing.
The roster for the Men’s hockey team was officially released in early January confirming the line up of 25 talented players. The line up looks very similar to the one of the 4 Nations Face-Off, an advanced tournament between NHL players representing Finland, Sweden, Canada, and the United States, played in February of 2025. The final game ended 3-2 with Canada taking the win against the U.S. team. At the start of this game, 3 different brawls occurred within the first 9 seconds, the teams ready to fight for the win.
Hopefully, the U.S. can overcome Canada in these Winter Games to make up for the loss. The General Manager of the U.S. team, Bill Guerin, believes that the team played very well despite not winning but commented that they “have to go back to the drawing board and start over again.”
Now, let’s discuss the roster full of talented ice hockey players ready to compete for the gold. The roster was carefully curated by a management group led by Bill Guerin. Guerin is a former NHL player who went to the Winter Olympics three times in his ice hockey career, so he’s perfect for the job.
In an interview with the NHL Network regarding the selection process, Guerin commented about the difficulty of the task due to the mass number of great players. This year, sadly none of the players that made it onto the USA team have played with the Blackhawks, although the Canadian team does have Brandon Hagel, former player for Chicago on their team. Additionally, Finland’s Olympic team has Henri Jokiharju and Olli Maatta, both former Blackhawks as well playing for them.
Now, back to the U.S., where almost all of the players on this roster are from NHL teams, which is a huge development because no player from the National Hockey League has participated in the Winter Olympics since the 2014 Sochi Winter games, 12 years ago.
You might be wondering, “How do these guys train for the Olympics?” Well, there was an Orientation camp back in August of 2025 in Plymouth, MN. 44 potential candidates for the roster showed up and participated in the camp, although contenders did not have to attend to be considered. Similarly, if you went to the camp, you were not guaranteed a spot on the team.
The Orientation camp was said to not have any on ice training but rather some team building activities. Connecting as a team is important because the players who are in the NHL will be coming straight from their team to the Olympics, meaning the team will not have much time to train together right before the Olympics.
The National Hockey League will have a break in their season to accommodate the players who will be playing the Winter Olympics.
The men’s competition on the ice starts on February 11th, while the first game for the United States is the 12th, against Latvia. So, get ready to cheer for the U.S. Hockey team in these Winter Games and all the other wonderful winter sports!
