Iconic sitcom “The Office” now has a sequel: “The Paper.” Co-created by the co-creator and showrunner of “The Office,” Greg Daniels, “The Paper” offers a similar feel and humor. While there are clear connections between the shows, “The Paper” is its own thing.
The storyline follows The Toledo Truth Teller, a historic yet struggling publication, observed by the same documentary crew that followed Dunder Mifflin. When Ned Sampson (Domhnall Gleeson) takes over as the new Editor-in-Chief, chaos ensues, namely including the eccentric, beauty-obsessed Esmeralda Grand’s (Sabrina Impacciatore) attempts to sabotage Ned’s new initiatives.
The audience is introduced to a variety of personalities, such as the odd Nicole Lee (Ramona Young), over-the-top Detrick Moore (Melvin Gregg), and sensible Mare Pritti (Chelsea Frei)- who is the only writer on the paper with real journalism experience. Beloved “The Office” accountant Oscar Martinez (Oscar Nuñez) also returns as Toledo Truth Teller accountant (who also dabbles in creating work for the paper).
“The Paper” is a fun watch. A quick ten episodes, it’s perfect to binge. It’s receiving very mixed reviews from the public. Many praise the show’s fresh humor, lovable characters, and commentary on today’s journalism. However, others believe it’s too similar to “The Office” and must figure out what kind of story it wants to tell. Additionally, viewers found it to feel a bit clunky or awkward with characters that don’t seem very sure of who they are (with many detesting Esmeralda). The show was renewed for a second season, and viewers are excited about its potential as the story progresses.
Like a newspaper dropped off on your front stoop, “The Paper” is ready for you to watch on Peacock.
